Cascade River State Park

Last week I was up at Cascade River State Park along the north shore. Cascade River is roughly 10 minutes south of Grand Marais. I had beautiful weather both days I was up there. I brought Dodger along with me, but he made it tricky to stand still in one place to take landscape photos. I still managed to get some photos of moving water.

As always you can click the image to view it larger or go into the Naturalvision gallery.

Shore Birds

This morning I headed out to photograph shore birds. Once I found the location of the birds I had a new problem. I was walking on ground that is normally under water. With soft, spongy and wet ground, I had to move quickly but not too quickly so I wouldn't scare off the birds. That proved to be a bit tricky. Once I got to a good spot with the sun on my back, all the birds flew away! So I walked to the end of the point and sat on a small outcrop of rocks. It didn't take too long for a friendly White-rumped Sandpiper to pay me a visit.

"2009 Photo Favorites Series" Yellow-headed Blackbird

This is the first of a series of videos where I briefly talk about my favorite photographs from 2009. This is my favorite Yellow-headed Blackbird photo. It's fitting that this video is complete because Derek and I have been out chasing these cool birds all week. There may be a video of that coming too...

Heating up (kinda)

Spring is really heating up around Minnesota too bad the weather hasn't! Yesterday, on the way to work I noticed baby geese near roadside ponds. Nearly every small pond in the metro you can see geese or ducks nesting. Baby geese and ducks are defiantly a small project for me once the weather cooperates. A longer term goal is baby loons, but those can be a little more difficult to locate.

Here is an image from last weeks shoot in Plymouth.

Bog Video

I've been busy but I finally got together a video from our trip up north this winter. Derek and I saw and photographed several species of birds we had never seen before. We even stumbled onto the same Great Gray Owl twice! We had a blast and can't wait to get back up there next year.

I'm Back

Red-winged Black Bird

Willet

Purple Martin

After a short time without shooting this spring I finally got back at it. A buddy of mine called and said there were Willet at a park in Plymouth. All I knew about Willet's is that they are shorebirds. So, I grabbed my camera and run out the door since I'd hadn't gone out and shot for so long. To make a long story shorter, once we got to the beach were the Willets were last spotted we quickly noticed there wasn't any birds around. Instead of packing up we walked around the area and found Purple Martins nests and a very corporative Red-winged Black Bird.
