Photo of the Week! Summer Time Fawn

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 300mm f2.8 w/TC14e II, ISO 640, f4.5, 1/1250

I went back to look through some old files the other night since I haven't been shoot all that much and found this photo. I ended up with a number of great shots from this outing near my house. Last August, I saw a pair of fawns grazing in an open field about a block from my house. I raced home and grabbed my camera. As I was putting shoes on "SMACK" my D7000 with my 300mm f2.8 hit the title floor! I quickly assessed the damage made sure it was still working. Thankfully it was! I raced down the street and spent a good 30 minutes photographing this little bugger.

The photo shoot is hard to forget, after all I damaged my new camera and ended up with great photos. Oh, did I mention that I got poison ivy as well!!

One of my favorite images from 2011 was from this shoot.

Photo of the Week! Fawn

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 300mm f2.8 w/TC14, ISO 640, f4.5, 1/1000, +1/3ev

Earlier this week I saw a couple of fawns in a field near my house. I went home grabbed my camera and heading out to the field. As I was walking through the tall grass I told myself to watch out for poison ivy. Well, of course I ended up with poison all over my knees and shins! I am happy with how the photos turned despite getting poison ivy.

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 300mm f2.8 w/tc14 @420mm, f5.6, ISO 400, 1/2000

I just had to post this photo! On a morning that I woke up to 5 inches of new snow, I needed to laugh at something.

Photo of the Day! White-tail Deer!

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 500mm f/4 AFS @ ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/800
This white-tail was from our shoot last weekend. We had some very cooperative deer, some even inquisitive. The snow is melting and spring is coming. It will be interesting if we can continue to locate the deer and watch them loose their more dull beige fur in favor of their brighter summer reddish color. Maybe we can even find some fawns to photograph!

Photo of the Day! Buck Portrait

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 300mm f3.5, ISO 400, 1/3500

This buck came a little too close for my 300mm lens. after this shot I quickly switched to my 70-200mm to get a full body shot.

Photo of the Day! Late Season Buck

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 300mm f2.8, ISO 400, f5, 1/1600, +.1/3ev

I finally got my opportunity to shoot with my new Nikon D7000 this week. We watched a couple of coyotes walk across a frozen lake, but were not able to get any photos. Then we came across a large number of deer. After a short time this late season buck came walking out of the woods! It was a very impressive animal with a very broad set of antlers!

White-tail Deer pt 2

Nikon D90, Nikkor 300mm f2.8 w/TC14 , ISO 500, f6.3, +2/3ev

At the time, I didn't think this would be the last image I would make with my beloved Nikon D90. Just a few days after I made this image, I sold it to upgrade to a Nikon D7000!! Enough about that, I'm still amazed of the sharpness of the 300mm f2.8 with the 1.4x teleconveter attached.

Photo of the Day! White-tailed Deer

Nikon D90, Nikkor 300mm f2.8 w/TC14, ISO 500, f6.3, +2/3ev

Last Monday Chad and I were out looking for white-tailed deer just minutes from downtown St. Paul, MN. This was my first visit to the area, but Chad had been there before. To my surprise there were deer everywhere! 40 to 50 deer just roaming around the park allowing us to shoot without worrying about spooking them.

Photo of the Day! White-tail Deer

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 500mm f/4 AFS @ ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/1250, EV +1
Here is another doe from this week. There was a large group together and I got to see some fun interaction. They moved off into the woods not long after I arrived so I'll have to head back to capture some of those interaction shots another time.

Photo of the Day! Oh Dear, 2 Deer!

Nikon D7000, Nikkor 500mm f/4 AFS @ ISO 500, f/5.6, 1/1600

I photographed these two deer yesterday. This image struck me because of balance in composition. I often try to get impactful images with multiple subjects, sometimes with success, sometimes not. I spent quite some time with the deer and will be posting more soon!
